1. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)
Established in the year 1956, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi is a medical college and medical research public university. It is the first Indian center to successfully perform the cardiac transplant and it is the leader in stem cell therapy.
There are 11 AIIMS institutes established in total with 12 more under development. These institutes have been declared as Institutes of National Importance by an Act of Parliament.
AIIMS New Delhi has 49 departments, 8 speciality centres, and 18 central facilities. The main campus is spread into 5 locations.
Admission to AIIMS is done through AIIMS examination which is conducted by AIIMS New Delhi once in a year for UG courses. For PG courses AIIMS PG examination is conducted every six months. There are about 42 speciality PG courses. AIIMS doesn’t consider NEET scores to grant seats.
It offers MBBS course at bachelor’s degree level followed by master’s degree level specialization in various fields like – surgery, medicine and other fields. There are at least 45 superspecialties at AIIMS at higher master's degree level. PhD level research courses are also available in AIIMS.
2. Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research
Located in Chandigarh, India and established in the year 1962, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) is a medical and research institute of National importance which provide medical, educational, research and training facilities to students.
PGIMER does not provide MBBS degree, i.e it does not provide UG level degrees (MBBS, BDS), instead it provides admissions for PG and post doctoral courses twice in a year.
PGIMER has an operational satellite centre at Sangrur in Punjab. The institute accepts medical students from other countries for elective training in any of its department.
Admissions are granted through all-India level examination held by the institute based on merit. It is one of the most competitive exam conducted across India. Apart from medical, the institute offers paramedical and nursing training too.
3. Christian Medical College
Established in 1900, Christian Medical College Vellore (CMC Vellore) is one of the oldest institutions of India. The college has accomplished significant achievements in India like performing the first successful open heart surgery in India (1961) and starting the first college of nursing in 1946 among many other achievements.
This private, educational and research institute is located in Vellore, Tamil Nadu and provides UG, Diploma and PG courses along with distance education course.
The college offers MBBS, 57 post-graduate diploma and degree medical courses, 44 Allied Health Science courses, and 14 diploma courses in nursing and other fields, and 52 Fellowship courses. A total of about 2500 students are enrolled per year.
Admission will be based on NEET scores and other eligibility criteria.
4. Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences
Established in the year 1983, the institute is named after Sanjay Gandhi. The institute imparts PG medical training and grants its own degrees. It is the medical institute under State Legislature Act.
The Institute offers DM, MCh, MD, PhD, Post Doctoral Fellowships (PDF) and Post Doctoral Certificate Courses (PDCC), and Senior Residency in various specialities.
There are 29 academic departments with more than 190 faculty members. It was the first Indian Institution to start DM courses in Clinical Immunology, Medical Genetics and MCh in Endocrine Surgery.
Students who have completed MBBS degree are eligible for MD course on the basis of NEET PG score. Admission to DM, MCh, PDC course is based on the exam conducted by the institute.
5. Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences & Research
Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre (AIMS), also referred as Amrita Hospital was founded in 1998. It is a super-specialty quaternary care health center and medical school in Kochi, India.
The institute offers UG and PG courses in medical, dental, nursing and pharmacy departments.
AIMS has bagged many awards in healthcare at state and national level. The institute announced that it had developed a nanomedicine for treating drug resistant cancer cells in 2012.
Admission to UG medical course (MBBS) is done through NEET exam, and NEET PG is considered to grant admissions for MD/MS programs
6. Banaras Hindu University
Formerly called as the Central Hindu College, Banaras Hindu University was established in 1916 by
Madan Mohan Malaviya and Annie Besant. It is the largest residential university in Asia with over 30,000 students residing in the campus.BHU is organised into 6 institutes and 14 faculties (streams) and about 140 departments of which, the Institute of Medical Sciences offers UG, PG and PhD degrees across various departments.
The College of Medical Sciences was upgraded to Institute of Medical Sciences in 1971 and currently it has 33 departments of Modern Medicine including 10 Departments of Super-specialities, 4 Departments of dentistry, 11 Departments of Ayurveda and a school of Nursing.
Admission to MBBS and BDS courses will be made based on merit through NEET UG Exam. And admission to BAMS and Nursing courses is through exams conducted at university level.
7. Kasturba Medical College
Established in 1953 in Manipal, Karnataka, India, Kasturba Medical College (KMC) was the first self-financing medical college in India. The medical degree (MBBS) given by KMC is recognized worldwide, including the General Medical Council, ECFMG, Australian Medical Council and Malaysian Medical Council among several others.
KMC offers UG, PG, Certificate and Super speciality courses. It has 36 departments, anatomy museum, cardiology labs and a simulation lab.
KMC has exchange programs with Loma Linda University, United States, Operation Eyesight Universal, Canada, Dundee University, Dundee, Scotland, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, United States and Maastricht University, Netherlands.
Admission to KMC is done through NEET scores and there are no management seats available.
8. Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research
Established in 1823, The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) is one of the oldest institution which comes under the direct administrative control of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. It is an Institute of National Importance.
JIPMER has 2 campus – JIPMER Puducherry and JIPMER Karaikal and the total seat offered for admission are 200 (for UG course) and 200 (for PG course).
Admission to the courses are made on all-India basis through JIPMER exam which is conducted once in a year for UG course and twice in a year for PG course. The institute does not consider NEET score for admission and it grants its own degrees.
The institute also offers super speciality and doctoral courses along with nursing, B.Sc etc. JIPMER is a Member of TEIN Network (Trans-Eurasia Information Network), the hospital can interact and share knowledge with European and Asian Countries.
9. Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences
The Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) has been established by the Government of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi as an Autonomous Super-speciality Institute in 2009. It is a ‘de-novo institute with a promise for excellence’ in Hepatobiliary Medicine, Surgery and Research and is a unique institute that is dedicated to patient management, teaching and research.
ILBS offers training programs for super-specialties related to Hepato-Biliary and Pancreatic Sciences through the Post-Doctoral 3 year courses and M.Ch. in Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery. Students are being trained in postdoctoral certificate courses, several short-term training programs and observer-ship programs for training the faculty and students of other institutes.
Admission for DM, M.ch, PhD, PDCC, PGCC courses are done through NEET (SS) scores.
10. King George`s Medical University
Established in 1905, King George`s Medical University (KGMU) was formerly known as Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University, It came into being after the upgrade of King George's Medical College (established in 1911) into a university by an act passed by government of Uttar Pradesh.
KGMU offers degree courses in UG, PG and doctoral courses. Apart from these courses the institute offer paramedical, super speciality, nursing courses
Admission to UG courses is done through NEET exam whereas for MD courses UP State Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination (UP PGMEE) is considered.
