There’s stiff competition for medical seats throughout India and a state like Karnataka is a much sought out place for medical studies. The state has good number of medical and dental institutions. There are a total of 6,305 medical seats available in 50 medical colleges approved by MCI. Whereas the number of dental colleges is 40 in which 3 are run by government. MBBS and BDS admission in Karnataka is strictly based on NEET UG. NIRF - The National Institutional Ranking Framework was approved by the MHRD and launched by Honourable Minister of Human Resource Development on 29th September 2015. this framework outlines a methodology to rank college/institutes across the country.

1. Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal

  • Established in 1953 in Manipal, Karnataka, India, Kasturba Medical College (KMC) was the first self-financing medical college in India. The medical degree (MBBS) given by KMC is recognized worldwide, including the General Medical Council, ECFMG, Australian Medical Council and Malaysian Medical Council among several others.

2. St. John's Medical College (SJMC), Bengaluru

  • St. John's Medical College is a prestigious private religious minority medical college which is a part of the St. John's National Academy of Health Sciences run by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India. It was established in 1963.

  • The National Assessment and Accreditation Council, a Review Committee of the University Grants Commission, has recognized the excellence of St. John's Medical College and Hospital and accorded it with a 5 star grading.

  • Formerly known as Bangalore Medical College (BMC), the college was established in 1955. It is a medical college run by Government of Karnataka. BMCRI is an autonomous institution under the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Jayanagar, Bangalore.

  • The Tele-Medicine unit was started in collaboration with ISRO on the eve of Golden jubilee celebrations and it makes BMCRI the first Government Medical college to provide this facility in the state of Karnataka.

  • It is attached to 4 teaching hospitals in bengaluru – Victoria hospital, Bowring & Lady Curzon hospitals, Vanivilas Women and Children hospital, Minto Eye hospital and SDS Tuberculosis Sanatorium.

7. Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMCRI), Mysore

  • Formerly known as Mysore Medical College, the Mysore Medical College and Research Institute which is also known as Government Medical College, Mysore is the oldest medical colleges in India. It was founded in 1924 by Sri Krishnarajendra Wodeyar, it is the first medical college to be established in the Karnataka region and the seventh in India. The college is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Jayanagar, Bangalore.

  • Established in 1963, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College is a constituent medical school of KLE University.
