Karnataka is one of the best place to study engineering and Bengaluru is the most sought out city for higher education, specially, engineering. The state is blessed with many government, private aided, and unaided colleges in the state and bengaluru being the IT hub attracts students all over the country to it. Other factors that favour education in bengaluru are – culture, IT companies, weather, huge number of colleges. There are around 218 engineering colleges in Karnataka which are affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum.

Requisite to study in Karnataka

To study in one of the colleges in Karnataka, the student must first clear the respective entrance exam, KCET – Karnataka Common Entrance Test which is organised every year by Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA). KCET has its own eligibility criteria which must be satisfied by the candidate after which he/she will be allowed to write the exam and then the candidate must clear the cutoff. Counselling will be organised for all eligible candidates who can then choose the college and branch of study. What is NIRF

NIRF - The National Institutional Ranking Framework was approved by the MHRD and launched by Honourable Minister of Human Resource Development on 29th September 2015. this framework outlines a methodology to rank college/institutes across the country.

1. National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal

  • Formerly known as Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC), NITK is public engineering university founded in 1960. the institute is recognised as an Institute of National Importance by Government of India and it one of the 31 NITs. It is located in Surathkal, Mangalore in close proximity to the Arabian Sea

  • The institute began with offering 3 under-graduate courses - Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil and started expanding ever since. Now, it offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Engineering, Science and Management and has 14 departments, 11 support centres with about 200 faculty members, 300 support staff, 5,500 students and 15,500 alumni worldwide.

  • Admissions to UG programs are based on JEE Main Exam where marks in the class 12 board exams serves as a cut off and admissions to PG programs is done through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science. MCA admissions are made based on NIMCET (NIT MCA Common Entrance Test).

2. Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), Manipal

  • Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) is a constituent institution of Manipal Academy of Higher Education that specializes in the fields of engineering and technology. It is one of the self-financed colleges established in the year 1957 and is one of the consistently top ranked colleges in India.

  • MIT offers Bachelor’s degree, M.Tech, M.S., MCA and integrated MBA degrees. It has 16 academic departments.

  • Admissions to MIT is done through MAHE OET (formerly known as MU OET). The test in conducted online at various exam centres across the country. A student is provided 2 chances to take up the exam. Admissions to postgraduate programs are either on the basis of an entrance exam or the performance in an undergraduate degree program.

  • The institute has been given 43rd rank by NIRF for the year 2019 and it is ranked 5th among Private engineering colleges in India. The B.Tech course fee is Rs. 1,540,000/-.

3. R. V. College of Engineering (RVCE), Bengaluru

  • Rashtreeya Vidyalaya College of Engineering (RVCE or R.V College) is a self-financing college established in the year 1963. The institution is run by Rashtreeya Sikshana Samithi Trust (RSST).

  • It is one of the top colleges in bengaluru and highly sought by engineering aspirants. RVCE is accredited by the All India Council for Technical Education and all its departments are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation.

  • Admissions for UG programs are done through KCET and COMEDK and admissions for PG programs is through GATE and Post Graduate Karnataka CET. Students are also admitted through management quota (no merit required) and lateral entry (for diploma holders).

  • The institute has 12 departments (for UG programs) and it has been ranked 63 by NIRF in the year 2019. 4. Ramaiah Institute of Technology (RIT), Bengaluru

  • Formerly known as M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology (MSRIT), the private engineering college was established in 1962 and since 2007, RIT has been academically autonomous for both UG and PG programs.

  • With an average of 96% placement percentage, RIT is one of the oldest institutions in South India. RIT offers Bachelor of Engineering (BE) and Bachelor of Architecture (B Arch) at the Under Graduate level in 12 branches, Master’s programs in various branches and PhD program in 12 areas. Apart from this the institution is an approved Research Centre by Government of Karnataka.

  • The institute has collaborated with 46 industries so far and is accredited by NAAC with 'A' grade.

5. International Institute of Information Technology (IIITB), Bengaluru

  • Established in 1999, International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore (IIITB) is an Indian private research university which is conferred with Deemed university status. IIITB is a not-for-profit society registered under the Government of Karnataka Act.

  • IIITB offers Dual degrees (B.Tech + M.Tech), PG degrees and Doctoral degrees. Apart from this it also offers 11 months Post Graduate Program (PGP's) in various specializations.

  • Admission to iMtech program is done on the basis of JEE Main (Paper 1) ranking, to flagship M.Tech program, GATE performance is the sole consideration, and for PGP programs – GRE, GMAT or CAT scores will be considered followed by an online exam and personal interview.

  • Tuition fees for iMtech program is Rs. 1,34,000/- per semester. IITB has been ranked 65th in the state by NIRF for the year 2019.

6. B. M. S. College of Engineering (BMSCE), Bengaluru

  • B.M.S. College of Engineering (BMSCE) was founded in the year 1946 and became autonomous in 2008. Located diagonally opposite to the famous Bull temple in Basavanagudi, Bengaluru, this institute was the first private sector initiative in technical education in India.

  • BMSCE has the unique distinction of being one of the first Institution in India identified by National Board of Accreditation for evaluation under Tier-I NBA Accreditation Washington accord.

  • There are 17 departments in the institute and the college awards UG and PG degrees. The 4 year B.E program is available across 13 streams. BMCE has been ranked 69th by NIRF for the year 2019.

  • Admission for UG programs is done through KCET, COMEDK. Apart from this, students can get seat through management quota (provided they have appeared for one of the entrance examination mentioned above) and diploma holders can get seat through lateral entry scheme.

  • Fee structure for students through KCET (Karnataka) – Rs. 22,060/- , for Non-Karnataka KCET students – Rs. 23,560/- , KCET SC/ST and Category 1 students (Karnataka) – Rs. 25,650/- and for Non-Karnataka KCET SC/ST and Category 1 students – Rs. 27,150/-. 7. Siddaganga Institute of Technology (SIT), Tumkur

  • Established in 1963 with just 3 courses of engineering, Siddaganga Institute of Technology (SIT) is a technological institute run by the Sri Siddaganga Educational Society. It is one of the 14 engineering colleges under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) a World Bank project, administered by the Government of Karnataka.

  • The institute offers UG degrees in 12 disciplines and PG degrees in 14 disciplines. The faculty strength is about 310 and student strength is about 5000. Its UG courses are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).

  • Admission to UG courses (B.E) is done through KCET, COMEDK and Management quota where 50% of total seats are for students through KCET , and the remaining seats are divided between COMEDK and Management quota.

  • Course Fee for all the academic programs will be as per the governemnt announcement and updated time to time. SIT has been ranked 79th by NIRF for the year 2019.

  • More than 100 companies visit the college for placement. SIT is the first institution among the affiliated colleges of the Visvesvaraya Technological University to establish a full-fledged Training and Placement Department.

8. New Horizon College of Engineering (NHCE), Bengaluru

  • Established in 2001, New Horizon College of Engineering is part of the New Horizon Educational Institution. It is located in Bangalore's “IT corridor,” near Marathahalli, on the Ring Road.

  • New Horizon College of Engineering is NBA – Accredited in all its courses. The institute has 12 departments and it provides UG, PG and doctoral degrees. 9. Jain university, Bengaluru

  • Jain University originates from Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain College (SBMJC), established by the JGI GROUP in 1990. It was conferred deemed to be university status in 2009 and it is now ranked consistently among top universities in India by India Today Nielsen Best Universities Survey.

  • JSS Science and Technology University is a private university established in 1963. It was affiliated to the Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, but now it's a part of JSS Science and Technology University from 2016 - 2017 academic year.

  • SJCE has 12 departments in engineering, a Master of Computer Applications department. It is accredited by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), all its departments are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). It has been ranked 120th by NIRF for the year 2019.
