The amount of heat produced in calorie or joule when one gram of a substance (food or fuel) is completely burnt or oxidised is known as calorific value.
For methane, CH4(g)+2O2(g)⟶CO2(g)+2H2O(l); ΔcH=−890.3kJmol−1
So, the calorific value of methane =16890.3 =55.64kJg−1
