Q. When methane burns, $890.3\, kJ\, mol ^{-1}$ of energy is released. The calorific value for methane is______ $kJ\, g ^{-1}$.

Thermodynamics

Solution:

The amount of heat produced in calorie or joule when one gram of a substance (food or fuel) is completely burnt or oxidised is known as calorific value.
For methane,
$CH _{4( g )}+2 O _{2( g )} \longrightarrow CO _{2( g )}+2 H _{2} O _{(l)} ; $
$\Delta_{ c } H =-890.3\, kJ\, mol ^{-1}$
So, the calorific value of methane $=\frac{890.3}{16}$
$=55.64\, kJ\, g ^{-1}$
