∵ (i) Sodium acetate, i.e. ( CH 3 COONa ) in water gives CH 3 COOH and NaOH as follows: CH 3 COONa + H 2 O leftharpoons CH 3 COOH + NaOH Hence, for (i) p H > 7. [∵ solution is basic] AlSO, (ii) when, ammonium chloride, i.e. ( NH 4 Cl ) is added in water, it gives NH 4+(aqueous) and Cl -(aqueous) ions. NH 4+(aqueous) + H 2 O arrow NH 3+ H ++ OH - Hence, p H < 7 i.e. for (i) p H>7 and for (ii) p H<7.
