Stomata are tiny pores complex found in the epidermis of leaves and other soft aerial parts. The size of stomata is 10−14μm in length and 3−12μm in breadth. The number of stomata per cm2 of leaf surface varies from 1000−60,000 or 10−600/mm2. In mesophytic plants, stomata occur on both the surface and their number is roughly equal on both the surfaces in grasses and monocots. They are meant for gaseous exchange but are also main source of transpiration.
