Q. The number of stomata present per $ cm^{2} $ of a leaf is

AMUAMU 2003

Solution:

Stomata are tiny pores complex found in the epidermis of leaves and other soft aerial parts. The size of stomata is $10-14 \,\mu m$ in length and $3-12 \,\mu m$ in breadth. The number of stomata per $cm ^{2}$ of leaf surface varies from $1000-60,000$ or $10-600 / mm ^{2}$. In mesophytic plants, stomata occur on both the surface and their number is roughly equal on both the surfaces in grasses and monocots. They are meant for gaseous exchange but are also main source of transpiration.
