The Z-scheme of electron transport is non-cyclic photophosphorylation. It involves both PS−I and PS−II. It is the scheme of transfer of electrons, starting from the PS−II, uphill to the acceptor, down the electron transport chain to PS−I, excitation of electrons, in the reaction centre of PS−I transfer to another acceptor and finally downhill to NADP+reducing it to NADPH+H+. This scheme of electron transfer is called Z-scheme due to its characteristic shape.
