Total internal reflection can occur only when a ray is incident on the surface of a medium whose refractive index is smaller than that of the medium in which the ray is travelling. Since the refractive index of air is 1.00029 and that of diamond is 2.42, therefore brilliance of diamond is due to total internal reflection.
