Q. Why iron pyrite is not the ideal choice of ore for the extraction of iron?

TS EAMCET 2020

Solution:

Iron pyrite i.e., $F e S_{2}$, it is also known as
Fool's-Gold.
It is not an ideal choice of ore for extraction of iron, because it produces polluting sulphur containing gases, e.g. $SO _{2}, SO _{3}$ etc. though it is thermodynamically feasible, stable and can be used in roasting process.
