Q. Which of the following statements is true for the electrochemical Daniell cell?

AIIMSAIIMS 2004Electrochemistry

Solution:

Daniel cell is an electrochemical cell in which $Cu$ act as cathode and $Zn$ act as anode.

In Daniel cell :
(i) Electron flow from the $Zn$ anode to $Cu$ cathode and direction of current flow is reverse i.e., $Cu$ (cathode) to $Zn$ (anode).
(ii) The cell reaction is
$Zn + Cu ^{2+} \longrightarrow Zn ^{2+}+ Cu$
Thus $Cu ^{2+}$ ions (cations) move towards $Cu$ electrode (cathode) and get accumulated as $Cu$ metal.
