Q. Which of the following reactant give Tollens reagent and Fehlings solution test?

Punjab PMETPunjab PMET 2005Aldehydes Ketones and Carboxylic Acids

Solution:

Acetaldehyde give both Tollen's reagent and Fehling's solution test Acetaldehyde reduce Tollen's reagent to give silver mirror.
$CH _{3}- CH = O +2\left[ Ag \left( NH _{3}\right)_{2}\right]^{+}+3 OH ^{-}$
$\rightarrow CH _{3} COOH +\underset{\text{silver mirror}}{2 Ag} +4 NH _{3}+ H _{2} O$
and acetaldehyde reduce fehling solution to red cuprous oxide.
$CH _{3} CHO +\underset{\text{(Fehling solution)}}{2 Cu ^{+2}+5 OH ^{-}} \longrightarrow CH _{3} COOH$
$+ \underset{\text{red p.pt (cuprous oxide)}}{Cu _{2} O \downarrow+}3 H _{2} O$
