Q. Which of the following combination will form an electrovalent bond?

JamiaJamia 2006

Solution:

Key Idea: The electrovalent bond is formed between atoms which have difference in electronegativity more than 1.7. One of the atoms should be electron donor while other should be electron acceptor. (i) P and $ Cl $ and H and S form covalent bond among them because the difference in their electronegativity is less than 1.7. (ii) $ N{{H}_{3}} $ and $ B{{F}_{3}} $ form coordinate bond as N in $ N{{H}_{3}} $ donates electrons to B in $ B{{F}_{3}} $ . (iii) H and $ Ca $ form ionic bond because the difference in their electronegativity is more than 1.7.
