Q. Which is obtained on treating phenol with cone. $HNO_{3}$ ?

Solution:

$OH$ group is an activating group and it increase electron density on $o$- and $p$ - position in benzene ring. When phenol reacts with cone. $HNO_3$ in the presence of cone. $H_{2}SO_{4}$ , then nitration (electrophilic substitution) takes place and $2, 4, 6$-trinitrophenol is obtained.

$2,4,6$-trinitrophenol is also called picric acid. It is an explosive.
