Q. When hot aqueous $NaOH$ reacts with $Cl_{2}$ and gives self oxidised and reduce product in which $Cl$ are in different oxidation states.
If the oxidation state of $Cl$ in one product is $-1$ then what will be oxidation state of $Cl$ in another product is +------.

Solution:

Chlorine reacts with hot and concentrated solution of caustic soda $\left(\right.NaOH\left.\right)$ to give sodium chloride, sodium chlorate and water as the product.
$6NaOH+3Cl_{2} \rightarrow 5NaCl+NaClO_{3}+3H_{2}O$
Oxidation state of chlorine in chloride ion is $-1$ and in other product is +5.
