Q. When $HCl$ gas is passed into water, it gives a solution which contains $30 \% HCl$ by mass. The density of the resultant solution is $1.095\, g\, mL ^{-1}$. The molarity of the solution is_______ $M$.

Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry

Solution:

$30 \% HCl$ by mass means $30\, g$ of $HCl$ in $100\, g$ of solution.
The density of the solution is $1.095\, g\, mL ^{-1}$.
Hence, the volume of the solution $=\frac{100}{1.095}$
$=91.32\, mL$
Molarity $=\frac{30 \times 1000}{36.5 \times 91.32}=9\, M$
