Q. What are $X$ and $Y$ in the following reaction sequence?
$C_2H_5OH \xrightarrow{Cl_2}(X) \xrightarrow{Cl_2} Y$.

BITSATBITSAT 2009

Solution:

At first on reaction with alcohol, $Cl _{2}$ with act as oxidising agent and convert $C _{2} H _{5} O H$ into $CH _{3}- CHO ( X )$ In the second step chlorination will take place and $3 -Hs$ will be replaced by $3 Cl$ and $Y$ will be $Cl _{3} \cdot C - CHO$
$C _{2} H _{5} OH + Cl _{2} \rightarrow CH _{3}- CHO ( x )$. [Oxidation]
$CH _{3}-CHO + Cl _{2} \rightarrow Cl _{3} C-CHO$ [Chlorination]
