Solution:

$a=\frac{\left(m_{2}-m_{1}\right)}{\left(m_{1}+m_{2}\right)} g$
$\frac{g}{4}=\left(\frac{3-m}{3+m}\right) g$
$\frac{1}{4}=\frac{3-m}{3+m} $
$\Rightarrow 3+m=12-4 m$
$5 m=9$
$ \Rightarrow m=9 / 5=1.8 kg$
