Q. Three identical capacitors are first connected in series and then in parallel. The ratio of effective capacitances in two cases is

COMEDKCOMEDK 2009Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance

Solution:

Let capacitance of each capacitor be $C$.
When three capacitors are connected in series then equivalent capacitance is given by
$\frac{1}{C_{S}} = \frac{1}{C} + \frac{1}{C} + \frac{1}{C}$ or $C_{S} = \frac{C}{3}$
When three capacitors are connected in parallel then equivalent capacitance is given by,$ C_{P } = C + C+ C = 3C$
Required ratio $ = \frac{C_{S}}{C_{P}} = \frac{C 3}{3C} = \frac{1}{9}$
