Q. The work done when two moles of an ideal gas is compressed from a volume of $5\, m ^{3}$ to $1 \,dm ^{3}$ at $300 \,K$, under a pressure of $100\, Pa$ is:

Thermodynamics

Solution:

Work done $; w=-P_{\text {ext }}\left(V_{2}-V_{1}\right)$

Here; $P _{\text {ext }} =100 \,Pa$

$V _{1} =5 m ^{3}=5 \times 10^{3} L$

$\Rightarrow V _{2}=1 dm ^{3}=1 \,L$

$W =-100 \times(1-5000)=499900 \,K \,Pa\, L$

$= 499900\, J =499.9 \,kJ$
