Q. The weight of a man in a lift, moving upwards is 608 N while the weight of the same man in the lift moving downwards, with the same acceleration, is 368 N. His normal weight in newton is:

EAMCETEAMCET 1997

Solution:

If the lift is moving upwards with acceleration a, then $ m(g+a)=608\,\text{N} $ ?(i) If the lift is moving downwards with an acceleration a, then $ m(g-a)=368N $ ?(ii) Now, adding Eqs. (i) and (ii), we get $ 2mg=608+368=976 $ $ mg=488\,kg $
