Q. The standard electrode potential $ (E^{\circ}) $ for $ OCl^-/ Cl^- $ and $ Cl^-/ \frac{1}{2} Cl_2 $ respectively are $ 0.94\, V $ and $ -1.36\, V $ . The $ E^{\circ} $ value for $ O Cl^-/ \frac{1}{2}C l_2 $ will be

UPSEEUPSEE 2010

Solution:

Given,

(i) $OCl ^{-} \longrightarrow Cl ^{-} \, E^{\circ}=0.94\, V$

(i) $Cl ^{-} \longrightarrow \frac{1}{2} Cl _{2}+e^{-}\, E^{\circ}=-1.36\, V$

To get $OCl ^{-} \longrightarrow \frac{1}{2} Cl _{2}$

Eq. (i) + Eq. (ii),

$OCl ^{-} \longrightarrow \frac{1}{2} Cl _{2}+e^{-}\, E^{\circ}=(0.94-1.36)$

$=-0.42\, V$
