Q. The relative density of a metal may be found by hanging a block of the metal from a spring balance and nothing that in air, the balance reads $(5.00 \pm 0.05) N$ while in water, it reads $(4.00 \pm 0.05) N$. The relative density would be quoted as:

Physical World, Units and Measurements

Solution:

$ \text { Relative density }=\frac{\text { Weight in air }}{\text { Loss of weight in water }}$
$P=\frac{5.00}{1.00}=5.00$
$\frac{d P}{P}=\frac{0.05}{5.00}+\frac{0.1}{1.00}=0.11=11 \%$
$P=5.00 \pm 11 \%$
