Q. The reagent used for the separation of acetaldehyde from acetophenone is

AIIMSAIIMS 2004Aldehydes Ketones and Carboxylic Acids

Solution:

Acetaldehyde $\left( CH _{3} CHO \right)$ and acetophenone $\left( C _{6} H _{5} COCH _{3}\right)$ both react with phenyl hydrazine $\left( C _{6} H _{5} NHNH _{2}\right)$ and hydroxyl amine ( $NH _{2} OH$ ). It also give iodoform test with $\left( NaOH - I _{2}\right)$. But acetophenone does not give addition compound with $NaHSO _{3}$ unlike $CH _{3} CHO$.
