Q. The products of the following chemical reactions are
(i) $C_{2}H_{5}NH_{2} \, +C_{6}H_{5}SO_{2}Cl \rightarrow _{}^{}$
(ii) $C_{2}H_{5}NH_{2} \, +HNO_{2}\overset{H_{2} O}{ \rightarrow }$

Solution:

  • Benzene sulphonyl chloride ( $C_{6}H_{5}SO_{2}Cl$ ), which is also known as Hinsberg’s reagent, reacts with primary and secondary amines to form sulphonamides. The reaction of benzene sulphonyl chloride with primary amine yields N-alkylbenzenesulphonamide.
  • Aliphatic primary amines upon reaction with nitrous acid, they give primary alcohols.
The reactions as follows :
(i) $C_{2}H_{5}NH_{2} \, +C_{6}H_{5}SO_{2}Cl \rightarrow C_{6}H_{5}SO_{2}NHC_{2}H_{5} \, +HCl$
(ii) $C_{2}H_{5}NH_{2}+HNO_{2} \rightarrow \left[\right.C_{2}H_{5}N_{2}^{+}Cl^{-}\left]\right. \rightarrow _{}^{H_{2} O}C_{2}H_{5}OH+N_{2}+HCl$
