Q. The probability distribution curve for $2s$ electron appears like

Structure of Atom

Solution:

(a) is correct answer because $R^{2}$ is always +ve and there is one node in $2 s$ -orbital.

(b) is not possible because there is no node and this graph is for $1 s$ -orbital.

(c) is possible if we plot $r$ with $4 \pi r^{2} R^{2}$ for $2 s$ -orbital.

(d) is not possible because $R^{2}$ cannot be negative. It is obtained when ' $r$ ' is plotted with ' $R$ ' for $2 s$ -orbital.
