Q. The periodic table consists of 18 groups. An isotope of copper, on bombardment with protons, undergoes a nuclear reaction yielding element $X$ as shown below. To which group, element $X$ belongs in the periodic table?
${ }_{29}^{63} Cu +{ }_{1}^{1} H \rightarrow 6_{0}^{1} n +\alpha+2{ }_{1}^{1} H + X$

AIEEEAIEEE 2012

Solution:

${ }_{29}^{63} Cu +{ }_{1} H ^{1} \rightarrow 6{ }_{0} n ^{1}+{ }_{2}^{4} He +2{ }_{1} H ^{1}+{ }_{ z }^{ A } X$

Mass number: $63+1=1 \times 6+4+1 \times 2+ A$

$A=64-12=52$

Atomic number: $29+1=6 \times 0+2+2 \times 1+ Z$

$Z=30-4=26$

${ }_{z}^{A} X={ }_{26}^{52} Fe$

Hence $X$ is in group ' 8 ' in the periodic table.
