Q. The insulation of air vanishes when the electric field is $5 \times 10^{5} V / m$. The maximum charge that can be given to a sphere of radius $3 m$ is approximately

Electric Charges and Fields

Solution:

$E =\frac{ Kq }{ r ^{2}}$
$5 \times 10^{5}=\frac{9 \times 10^{9} \times q }{(3)^{2}}$
$\frac{5 \times 10^{5} \times 9}{9 \times 10^{9}}= q$
$\Rightarrow q =5 \times 10^{-4} C =500 \mu C$
