Q. The ground state electronic configuration of valence shell electrons in nitrogen molecule $\left( N _{2}\right)$ is written as
$K K, \sigma 2 s^{2}, \overset{*}\sigma 2 s^{2}, \sigma 2 p_{x}^{2}, \pi 2 p_{y}^{2} \approx \pi 2 p_{z}^{2}$
Bond order in nitrogen molecule is

Solution:

The $MO$ configuration of $N _{2}$ is
$K K, \sigma 2 s^{2},\overset{*} {\sigma} 2 s^{2}, \sigma 2 p_{x}^{2}, \pi 2 p_{y}^{2} \approx \pi 2 p_{z}^{2}$
Bond order of
$N_{2}=\frac{1}{2}\left[N_{b}-N_{a}\right]=\frac{1}{2}[8-2]=\frac{6}{2}=3$
