Q. The gaseous substance which decolourises bromine but does not give a precipitate with ammoniacal silver nitrate is:

EAMCETEAMCET 1998

Solution:

Unsaturated compounds like ethylene and acetylene decolourise $ \text{B}{{\text{r}}_{\text{2}}} $ water. Acetylene gives precipitate with ammoniacal $ \text{AgN}{{\text{O}}_{\text{3}}} $ but with ammoniacal $ \text{AgN}{{\text{O}}_{\text{3}}} $ ethylene do not give any reaction. $ \underset{CH}{\overset{CH}{\mathop{|\,|\,|}}}\,\xrightarrow{Ag{{(N{{H}_{3}})}_{2}}N{{O}_{3}}}\underset{C.Ag}{\overset{CH}{\mathop{|\,|\,|}}}\,\xrightarrow{Ag{{(N{{H}_{3}})}_{2}}N{{O}_{3}}}\underset{\begin{smallmatrix} \text{(white}\,\text{ppt)} \\ \text{Disilver}\,\text{acetylide} \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{\underset{C.Ag}{\overset{C.Ag}{\mathop{|\,|\,|}}}\,}}\, $ $ {{C}_{2}}{{H}_{4}}\xrightarrow{Ag{{(N{{H}_{3}})}_{2}}N{{O}_{3}}} $ No reaction
