Q. The chemical reaction,
$R-CH_2COOH \xrightarrow[(ii) H_2O]{(i) X_{2}/\text{red phosphorus}} R-\underset{\overset{|}{X}}{C}H-COOH$ is known as

AMUAMU 2015

Solution:

In Hell-Volhard-Zelinsky reaction, a-hydrogen of a carboxylic acid can be replaced by halogen using red phosphorus.
$R-CH_2COOH +X_2 \xrightarrow{\text{Red P}} R-\underset{\overset{|}{X}}{C}H-COOH$
$\alpha$ -halogenated acids are in fact good starting material for preparing other a-substituted acids.
