Q. The bond order of $H_2^−$ ion is $\frac{1}{2}$. If it has $2$ bonding electrons, how many antibonding electrons it will have?

UPSEEUPSEE 2014Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure

Solution:

Bond order $=\frac{1}{2}\left(N_{b}-N_{a}\right)$

$\frac{1}{2} =\frac{1}{2}\left(2-N_{a}\right)$

$\therefore N_{a} =2-1=1$
