Q.
Propane is obtained from propene by which of the following methods?
Delhi UMET/DPMTDelhi UMET/DPMT 2001
Solution:
(i) Wurtz reaction: It is method of preparation of alkane by reaction between alkyl halide and sodium. $2 R X+2 N a \xrightarrow{\text { Ether }}R-R+2 N a X$
(ii) Dehydrogenation: It is method of formation of alkene from alkane.
Hydrogen is removed from alkane during reaction.
(iii) Frankland reaction:
$\underset{\text { alkyl halide }}{R X}+Z n+X R \rightarrow \underset{\text { alkane }}{R}+Z n X_{2}$
It is method of preparation of alkane from alkyl halide.
(iv) Catalytic hydrogenation: It is method of preparation of alkane from alkene.
Hydrogen is added during this reaction.
$CH _{2}=\underset{\text { propene }}{ CH }- CH _{3} \xrightarrow[{+H_2O}]{200-300^{\circ} C }$
$CH _{3}-\underset{\text { propene }}{ CH _{2}}- CH _{3}$
