Q. Phenol can be converted to o-hydroxybenzaldehyde by

Solution:

Treatment of phenol with chloroform in presence of aqueous
$ NaOH $ or $ KOH $ at $ 70{}^\circ C $
followed by hydrolysis gives o-hydroxybenzaldehyde (salicylaldehyde) as the major product. This reaction is called Reimer-Tiemann reaction.
