Q. Permanganate $(VII)$ ion, $MnO_4^-$ oxidises $I^-$ ion to $I_2$ and gives manganese $(IV)$ oxide $MnO_2$ in basic medium. The skeletal ionic equation is given as
$pMnO^{-}_{4\left(aq\right)} + qI^{-}_{\left(aq\right)}+xH_{2}O_{\left(l\right)}^{ }\to rMnO_{2\left(s\right)} + sI_{2}+ yOH^{-}_{\left(aq\right)}$
The values of $p$, $q$, $r$ and $s$ are
p q r s
(a) 1 2 8 4
(b) 2 6 2 3
(c) 2 4 2 8
(d) 1 4 8 2

Solution:

$2MnO^{-}_{4\left(aq\right)} + 6I^{-}_{\left(aq\right)} + 4H_{2}O \left(l\right) \to 2MnO_{2\left(s\right)} + 3I_{2\left(s\right)} + 8OH^{-}_{\left(aq\right)} $
