Q. One mole of $P_{4}O_{10 }$ is allowed to react fully with dust and salt-free doubly distilled water and the volume is made up to $1 L$. What is the normality of the so-generated orthophosphoric acid?
$P_{4}O_{10} +6 H_{2}O \to 4H_{3} PO_{4}$

UPSEEUPSEE 2011

Solution:

$\underset{1\,mol}{P _{4} O _{10}}+6 H _{2} O \to \underset{4\, mol}{4 H _{3} PO _{4}}$

Thus, 4 moles of orthophosphoric acid are generated in $1 L$ solution.

$\therefore \quad$ Molarity $=4 M$

and normality $=$ molarity $\times$ basicity $=4 \times 3=12.0 N$
