Q. Number of moles of $MnO^{-}_4$ required to oxidise one mole of ferrous oxalate completely in acidic medium will be

AIPMTAIPMT 2008Redox Reactions

Solution:

No. of moles of $MnO _{4}^{-}$required to oxidize one mole of $F eC _{2} O _{4}$ completely in
acidic medium.
$3 MnO _{4}^{-}+24 H ^{+}+5 F eC _{2} O _{4} \longrightarrow 3 Mn ^{+2}+12 H _{2} O +10 CO _{2}+5 Fe ^{+3}$
5 moles of $F eC _{2} O _{4}$ reacts with 3 moles of $MnO _{4}^{-}$.
5moles of $FeC _{2} O _{4} \longrightarrow $ 3moles of $MnO _{4}^{-}$
1mole of $FeC _{2} O _{4} \longrightarrow \frac{3}{5}$ moles of $MnO _{4}^{-}$
$\therefore $ The number of moles of $MnO _{4}^{-}$required to oxidize one mole of ferrous oxalate completely in the acidic medium will be 0.6 moles.
