Q. Least count $\left[\right.LC\left]\right.$ is the minimum length measured by a Vernier calipers and [Let us define Vernier constant $\left(\right.VC\left.\right)=1MSD-1VSD\left.\right).$ Each main Scale division (MSD) of the calipers is $1mm$ and $N$ divisions of main scale are divided into 10 Vernier scale divisions $\left(\right.VSD\left.\right).$ If $N=6,$ then $LC=\frac{k}{10}$ (in $mm$ ). Find $k$ .

Solution:

Let
$1VSD=x$
$N$ Divisions of main scale coincides with $10$ Vernier scale divisions so
$10x=N\times 110x=6x=0.6mm$
The Least count will be
$\Rightarrow 1MSD-1VSD\Rightarrow 1-0.6\Rightarrow 0.4mm$
