Q. In veiw of the signs of $\Delta_{r}G^{\circ}$ for the following reactions :
$PbO_{2} + Pb \to 2PbO, \quad\Delta_{r}G^{\circ} < 0$
$SnO_{2} + Sn \to 2SnO, \Delta_{r}G^{\circ} > 0,$
which oxidation states are more characteristics for lead and tin ?

AIEEEAIEEE 2011The p-Block Elements

Solution:

Negative $\Delta_{r}G^{\circ}$ value indicates that + 2 oxidation state is more stable for $Pb^{2+}$. Also it is supported by inert pair effect that +2 oxidation state is more stable for Pb and + 4 oxidation state is more stable for Sn.
