Q. If the intermolecular forces vanish away, the volume occupied by the molecules contained in $4.5\, kg$ water of NTP will be given by

BHUBHU 2009

Solution:

Due to vanishing of intermolecular forces, the liquid would get converted into vapour.
We know that $18 \times 10^{-3} \,kg$ of water vapour occupies a volume of $22.4 \times 10^{-3} \,m ^{3}$ at NTP.
So, volume occupied by $4.5\, kg$ is
$\frac{22.4 \times 10^{-3}}{18 \times 10^{-3}} \times 4.5 \,m ^{3} $
$=5.6\,m ^{3}$
