Q. If equal volumes of $1 \, M \, KMnO_4$ and $1 \, M \, K_2Cr_2O_7$ solutions are allowed to oxidise $Fe(II)$ to $Fe(III)$ in acidic medium, then $Fe (II)$ oxidised will be

Redox Reactions

Solution:

$5 Fe ^{2+} MnO _{4}^{\Theta}+8 H ^{\oplus} \rightarrow 5 Fe ^{3+}+4 H _{2} O + Mn ^{2+}$
$6 Fe ^{2+}+ Cr _{2} O _{7}^{2-}+14 H ^{\oplus} \rightarrow 6 Fe ^{3+}+7 H _{2} O +2 Cr ^{3+}$
From these reactions, it can be seen that $Fe$ (II) will be oxidised more by $K _{2} Cr _{2} O _{7}$
