The energy released during the electron system is utilized in synthesizing ATP with the help of the ATP synthase enzyme (complex V). This complex consists of two major components $F_{1}$ and $F_{0}$ . For each ATP produced, $2H^{+}$ passes through $F_{0}$ from the intermembrane space to the matrix down the electrochemical proton gradient. Hence, accordingly, if 12 H+ ions pass then 6 ATP is produced.
