Q. Highest oxidation state of $Mn$ is present in

AFMCAFMC 2010Redox Reactions

Solution:

Let the oxidation state of $Mn$ is $x$.
(a) $KMnO _{4}+1+x+(-2) \times 4=0$
$x-7 =0 $
$x =+7$
(b) $K _{2} MnO _{4} (+1) \times 2+x+(-2) \times 4=0$
$x-6=0$
$x=+6$
(c) $Mn _{2} O _{3} x \times 2+(-2) \times 3=0$
$2 x=+6$
$x=+3$
(d) $MnO _{2} x+(-2) \times 2=0$
$x=+4$
Thus, oxidation state of $Mn$ is highest in $KMnO _{4}$.
