Q. Formation of diethyl ether from ethanol is based on a

AMUAMU 2004

Solution:

Diethyl ether can be prepared by the dehydration of ethanol with conc. $H _{2} SO _{4}$ at $410\, K$. In this method excess of alcohol is heated with conc. $H _{2} SO _{4}$ at $410\, K$.

In this reaction the temperature must be controlled because at higher temperature $(443 K )$, the alcohols get dehydrated to alkenes.
$CH _{3} CH _{2} OH \xrightarrow[443\,K]{ H _{2} SO _{4}}CH _{2}= CH _{2}+ H _{2} O$
