Q. For an ideal gas, coefficient of volume expansion is given by

Thermal Properties of Matter

Solution:

For an ideal gas, the coefficient of volume expansion at constant pressure can be found from the ideal gas equation, $ p V=\mu R T\,\,\,$...(i)
At constant pressure,
$p \Delta V=\mu R \Delta T\,\,\,$...(ii)
Divide Eq. (ii) by Eq. (i), we get
$\frac{\Delta V}{V}=\frac{\Delta T}{T}$
Also, $\frac{\Delta V}{V}=\alpha_{V} \Delta T$
i.e. $\alpha_{V}=\frac{1}{T}$, for ideal gas
So, for an ideal gas, coefficient of volume expansion is given by $\frac{1}{T}$.
