Q. Following is the substitution reaction in which $-CN$ replaces $-Cl$
$R - Cl + \underset{\text{(alcoholic)}}{KCN} \xrightarrow[\Delta]{} R - CN + KCl $
To obtain propanenitrile, $R-Cl$ should be

KCETKCET 2011Haloalkanes and Haloarenes

Solution:

$C _{2} H _{5}- Cl + \underset{(alc)}{KCN} \xrightarrow{\Delta} C _{2} H _{5}- CN + KCl$

Hence, to obtain propanenitrile, $R- Cl$ should be chloroethane.
