Q. Following compounds are given
(i) $CH _{3} CH _{2} OH$
(ii) $CH _{3} COCH _{3}$
(iii) $CH _{3}- \underset{\overset{|}{C}H_3}{C}HOH$
(iv) $CH _{3} OH$
Which of the above compound(s) on being warmed with iodine solution and $NaOH$, will give iodoform?

Solution:

Compounds having either $CH _{3} \overset{\underset{||}{O}}{C}$ - group or $CH _{3} CHOH -$ group, give iodoform when warmed when $I _{2}$ and $NaOH$.
Thus, $CH _{3} \underset{\overset{|}{H}}{C} HOH , CH _{3}- \underset{\overset{|}{H}}{O} - CH _{3}$,
$CH _{3}- \underset{\overset{|}{C}H_3}{C}HOH$
give iodoform when warmed with $I _{2}$ and $ NaOH . $ Remember, $NaOI $ xidises $CH _{3} CH _{2} OH$ to $CH _{3} CHO$, thus it gives positive iodoform test.)
