Q. Enzymes that catalyse the substrate level phosphorylation reaction in glycolysis belong to
Respiration in Plants
A
oxidoreductases
B
transferases
C
hydrolases
D
ligases
Solution:
In glycolysis, substrate level phosphorylation occurs in two steps :
- Formation of 3-phosphoglycerate from 1, 3-bisphosphoglycerate catalysed by enzyme phosphoglycerate kinase.
- Formation of pyruvate from phosphoenol pyruvate catalysed by enzyme pyruvate kinase.
Both these enzymes belong to the category of transferases. They transfer phosphate group from ATP to a substrate.
