Q. Consider the following reactions
(1) $\left( CH _3\right)_3 CCH ( OH ) CH _3 \xrightarrow{\text { conc. } H _2 SO _4}$
(2) $\left( CH _3\right)_2 CHCH ( Br ) CH _3 \xrightarrow{\text { conc. } KOH }$
(3) $\left( CH _3\right)_2 CHCH ( Br ) CH _3 \xrightarrow{\left( CH _3\right)_3 CO ^{\ominus} K ^{\oplus}}$
(4) Question

Which of these reactions(s) will produce Saytzeff product?

NTA AbhyasNTA Abhyas 2020Alcohols Phenols and Ethers

Solution:

Bulky base like $\left( CH _{3}\right)_{3} O ^{\ominus} K ^{\oplus}$ always prefers Hoffmann product (less stable alkene) in case of 1, 2 and 4 elimination product are according to Saytzeff Rule (more stable alkene)
